“Papillon, the Man Who Fooled the World” aims to demystify the lying myth of Henri Charrière, definitively proving that he never wrote any books. Papillon was published in 1969 and quickly became the third best-selling book on the planet, behind only the Holy Bible and the Quran, the Muslim Bible. However, when Henri Charrière appeared in France to promote it at a press conference, he contradicted himself greatly, and even went so far as to say that the book “Papillon” was a collective work and that he had not experienced those events. For five decades, many doubts persisted regarding this matter, and many asked themselves: Who really was the author of the books Papillon and Banco? I was one of them! I was convinced that the real Papillon, the writer of books, lived and was buried in the state of Roraima after escaping. To dispel these doubts, I spent 16 years investigating this intriguing mystery, and I finally proved one of the greatest hoaxes in world literature. The true author of the books: “DRY GUILLOTINE”, in Portuguese, “A ILHA DO DIABO” and “HELL ON TRIAL”, in Portuguese, Inferno no Julgamento, PAPILLON and BANCO, was the prisoner writer “René Belbenoit”, the mastermind behind the most spectacular escape (1935) ever recorded in that “Penal Colony of French Guiana”! His books were successful all over the world, and he helped to close the Colonial Hell, freeing hundreds and hundreds of comrades who, alongside him, suffered the bread that the devil kneaded. However, René Belbenoit paid a very high price. In order for his works to be successful, he was instructed and forced to go into hiding, and he sadly saw his works adulterated by one of his fellow escapees. The success was notorious and the work “Papillon” became the third best-selling book on the planet. The book was adapted for the cinema, the adulterer became a millionaire, and he passed nothing on to René Belbenoit. Ironically, Henri, in an attempt to prove that he was in fact the author of books, spent all the fortune he received from royalties from the book and the film Papillon on the production of a film that was considered a fiasco, dying poor and destroyed by drink in 1973. By rescuing the true story of “Papillon” “René Belbenoit”, I am sure that from now on his spirit will rest in peace.
