Brazil-Italy Tournament – 1994 The Brazil-Italy International Tournament took place in May 1994, between the end of the Campeonato Paulista (won by Palmeiras) and the beginning of the Campeonato Brasileiro (also won by Palmeiras). It was sponsored by Bombril and conceived by Parmalat, a multinational company that acted as co-manager of Verdão and Parma-ITA. In addition to the two clubs, Santos and Lazio-ITA were also invited, which would go on to be Italian runner-up in 1994-95, ahead of Parma-ITA, champion of the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) that same season that was about to begin. All games were played at the Palestra Itália Stadium, with clubs from the same country facing each other in the semifinals. Palmeiras beat Santos 1-0 (goal by Maurílio), while Lazio-ITA beat Parma-ITA 2-1 (interestingly, the goal for Parma-ITA was scored by striker Sorato, who was on loan from Verdão for the tournament, since the Italian team had many players serving their national teams in preparation for the World Cup in the United States). The following day, Santos secured third place by beating Parma-ITA 3-1. Afterwards, before the final, Palmeiras received banners and a trophy named after Calisto Tanzi, founder of Parmalat, from the tournament organizers, in honor of the two-time São Paulo state championship they had recently won. On the field, the home team was crowned champion of the quadrangular with a 3-0 victory over Lazio-ITA (goals by Maurílio and Edilson, twice), receiving the Bombril-Parmalat Cup. A little over a month later, Brazil and Italy would face each other in the final of the World Cup in the United States, filled with players who were unable to play in the tournament in the capital of São Paulo. On the green-and-yellow side were Palmeiras midfielders Mazinho and Zinho, while on the azzurro side were goalkeeper Marchegiani and forwards Signori and Casiraghi, from Lazio-ITA, and goalkeeper Bucci, defenders Benarrivo, Apolloni and Minotti and forward Zola, from Parma-ITA.
