Available until 04/11/2027 In Pakistan, where infant mortality is one of the highest in the world, an army of midwives, most of them trained by associations, now help pregnant women in disadvantaged neighborhoods and rural areas to carry their pregnancies to term. In Pakistan, being pregnant is not easy: due to the lack of medical monitoring during pregnancy, the maternal mortality rate is also one of the highest in the world. Climate change is leading to increasingly complicated living conditions for the poorest: temperatures can reach 50 degrees in summer and torrential monsoon rains wash away everything, houses and crops. Their names are Salma, Samina or Madhuri and they are sent to disadvantaged neighborhoods as well as to the most remote corners of the country, where health services are non-existent. Supported by doctors, they advise and treat expectant mothers. They also raise awareness against traditions and prejudices that encourage women to have more and more children while forcing them to give birth at home, away from dedicated health facilities. Health services are now engaged in a race against time to try to regulate births and allow pregnant women to finally give birth in decent conditions and newborns to live. #pakistan #pregnancy #arte Subscribe to the ARTE channel / @arte Follow us on social media!
