OVERTAKING CYCLISTS - HOW TO PERFORM THE MANOEUVRE SAFELY Overtaking cyclists when driving a motor vehicle is a very delicate maneuver, which must combine the rules of the highway code with common sense. As defined by the highway code, the carriageway is that part of the road intended for the circulation of vehicles. The bicycle is in all respects a vehicle; sure, it has no engine but that makes no difference, it remains a real vehicle for the highway code, which will therefore find itself running on the roadway together with cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles and many others. We will therefore find ourselves having vehicles on the roadway with extremely different characteristics, such as size, mass and speed at which they can circulate. Finding yourself in front of a much slower vehicle could create dangerous situations, in which the one who will pay the most, in the event of an accident and therefore a collision, will obviously be the driver of the vehicle that offers less protection, and the bicycle does not guarantee any type of protection. And it is for this reason that cyclists, together with motorcyclists and pedestrians of course, are classified as vulnerable road users, and therefore protected more by the relevant code. First of all, once we have seen the cyclist, we evaluate the general situation of the road, of the traffic and we check the center line to understand if there are the conditions to be able to pass him safely. If it seems possible, we check that we have VISIBILITY to check that there are no vehicles coming from ahead that would take away our space to perform an adequate lateral movement. We then check with the MIRRORS that there are no vehicles coming from behind that are about to overtake us. If everything is calm, we activate the LEFT ARROW to warn of our intention to move laterally to overtake the cyclist, keeping it on only for the time strictly necessary to move sideways, and not keeping it on for the entire duration of the overtaking. We begin the maneuver maintaining an adequate SAFETY DISTANCE and move laterally also maintaining an appropriate LATERAL SAFETY DISTANCE of at least one and a half meters, and possibly calculating the shape of the cyclist's fall and any possible swerving. After having completely passed him, we check with the RIGHT MIRROR that we can get back in without risking hitting him and doing the maneuver gradually. By doing these simple things, we will be able to overtake the cyclist in complete safety, for him, for us... and, if we want, also for our license. But now let's get in the car and go and actually overtake a cyclist. The Highway Code says that "cyclists must proceed in single file in all cases in which the traffic conditions require it and, in any case, never more than two abreast; when they ride outside of built-up areas, they must always proceed in single file, unless one of them is under ten years of age and is riding on the right of the other". In short, it means that only in certain circumstances, and only in built-up areas, cyclists can also ride side by side; outside of built-up areas, they can never ride side by side. However, this does not mean that, even if they were to do so, the driver is authorized to overtake them with inappropriate maneuvers, putting their lives in danger. #overtakingcyclists #drivingexam #highwaycode
