Functional simple cysts are very common in young women. They disappear on their own after a few menstrual cycles. It is unnecessary and meaningless to give birth control pills to treat the cyst. They are often detected incidentally without causing any symptoms. In older ages, large cysts with septa, solid papillary structures, irregular surfaces, and rapidly growing cysts should be examined more closely and carefully because they have the potential to worsen. Ultrasound is often sufficient for evaluation. MRI and similar advanced imaging methods are rarely required. It is appropriate to confirm the decision for surgery with a second or even a third physician's opinion.
