In 1959, Gaanderen is a village in the Achterhoek region where industry is firmly present. Hordes of fathers and sons work in factories with well-known names such as Neerlandia, Ferro and Pelgrim. They make stoves, fireplaces, pots and pans. For most married women, housework and childcare are the most important tasks. But in Van Heek's shirt studio on the Rijksweg, young ladies also find a job. There are quite a few shops in the village, such as the bag shop Tassenhuis van Wolsink and Betting home furnishings.
