The residence of Sarah Pardee Winchester, widow of gunsmith William Wirt Winchester, was built in 1884 and continuously expanded for 38 years, until 1922. It is considered one of the most haunted houses in the world and certainly the most haunted in the United States of America. Sarah Pardee was married to the son of the founder of the famous Winchester Repeating Arms Company, with whom she had a daughter, Annie, who died prematurely in 1866; in 1881 her husband William also died of tuberculosis. Heartbroken and depressed by these two great losses, and convinced that a curse had fallen on her family, Sarah consulted a medium who told her that she must leave her home in New Haven and go west to build a large house for herself and all the spirits of the victims of the Winchester rifles, predicting that she would live as long as she continued to build her house. Winchester's widow inherited more than $20 million and 50% of the ownership of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, with a daily income of one thousand dollars, estimated in 2013 at about $25,000 per day. This enormous amount of money gave her the opportunity to build and continually construct the great house. The work, begun in 1884 and under the constant guidance of Sarah Winchester, was carried out daily, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for 38 years, until September 5, 1922, the day of Sarah's death from natural causes.
