Tramping has been popular in Czech society for ninety years. He always had his enthusiastic followers as well as a number of unwelcome scoffers. The authorities and public officials also watched the suspicious behavior of Czech woodcrafters with displeasure. Officials in the times of the first republic, the protectorate and the communist rulers wanted to put an end to tramps. It seemed that when the longed-for freedom finally arrived, the golden days of tramping would logically follow. It didn't happen that way. It is often more difficult for hitchhikers today than ever before.
