Tamaki Shrine is famous as one of the oldest shrines in Japan and cannot be reached unless called. Located in Totsukawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, it is the inner shrine of the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha) and is also a World Heritage Site. Tamaki Shrine was founded by Emperor Sujin. Omiwa Shrine, the first shrine in Yamato Province, was also founded by Emperor Sujin, and Sumisaka Shrine, which enshrines Omononushi-no-Kami (the Lord of the Great God) and is home to Japan's oldest god of health, was also founded by Emperor Sujin, and Sumisaka Shrine enshrines Amenominakanushi-no-Kami. Tamaki Shrine was also founded by Emperor Sujin, and even among the many power spots in Nara Prefecture where En-no-Gyoja and Kobo Daishi "Kukai" (the Great Master) have enshrined the Nyoi-hoju, Tamaki Shrine is in a class of its own. The deity enshrined at Tamaki Shrine is Kunitokotachi-no-Mikoto. He is the root deity considered to be the same as Amenominakanushi-sama, and Amenominakanushi (the root deity of the Kojiki) is the root deity of the Nihon Shoki, and is considered to be the same deity in Yoshida Shinto, and in Ise Watarai Shinto, Amenominakanushi and Kunitokotachi-no-Mikoto are interpreted as the root deities of the universe.
