We are in the German Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. In Schools it is required to emphasize discipline and order. In one of the schools, however, a conflict arises between the young teacher Jan Flemming and the principal Jurgen Heinrich Flachsmann. The two represent two different worlds: while Flachsmann embodies outdated tradition, i.e. a lazy teaching staff, Flemming is the opposite: he is the young, dynamic educator that students need... In a word, he is a man who understands students and takes into account their problems. Because of their differing opinions, Flachsmann and Flemming often clashed. The conflict deepens even more when the School has to decide who should occupy a senior teaching post. The director wants the job to be filled by Karsten Diercks, a very lazy man, but who possesses material that could endanger his position... Therefore, he does everything in his power to prevent Flemming from getting the job. Good thing Miss Gisa Holm sticks with Flemming. To solve the problem, school counselor Prell arrives. He realizes that Flachsmann is incompetent and puts Flemming in charge of the school.
