Teaching 2024-2025: Origin and evolution of the outer Solar System Course of October 23, 2024: The origin of comets and the ghostly Planet IX Professor: Alessandro Morbidelli Chair Planetary training: from Earth to exoplanets Comets are classified into two large families according to their orbital properties: comets of the Jupiter family and comets with isotropic distribution. The former come from the Kuiper belt, more precisely from its sub-component called the scattered disk. The latter come from a reservoir located at the edge of the Solar System, the Oort cloud. The mechanisms that transport comets from their sources to the inner Solar System will be detailed, as well as the origin of these two reservoirs. We will also address the scientific debate around the possible existence of a ninth planet in the Solar System.
