Parting with items of clothing is often not that easy. When sorting things out, it helps to proceed according to the following criteria: emotional value and memories, when they were last worn, and the fit. Organization aids such as closet systems with clothes rails and shelves, shoe cabinets, or trouser and belt holders can particularly bring clarity to the closet. After clearing out, it's time to sell: We visit a second-hand shop with a new concept: Here you can borrow up to four items at once with a subscription. TIPS FROM THE ORGANIZATION EXPERT To keep things in order in the long term, the expert recommends sorting the closet twice a year - ideally in autumn and spring. Also: align the hangers with the opening facing forward and turn them over after wearing. After a year, you will have an overview of what you are actually still wearing. Vacuum bags are suitable for seasonal items such as thick winter jackets: pack them up and suck out the air with the vacuum cleaner. This way, the items are stored dust-free and save space. AFTER THE USED CLOTHING CONTAINER, EVERYTHING ENDS UP IN A USED CLOTHING SORTING PLANT Used clothing containers are operated by non-profit organizations such as the German Red Cross or the Malteser. Incidentally, reputable used clothing containers can be recognized by the FairWertung, DZI and BVSE seals. Some of the clothing usually ends up in used clothing recycling plants such as the one in Apolda, Thuringia. In the sorting plant, the clothing is sorted according to type and quality. Around 60 percent of the clothing ends up abroad for a small price. Second-hand sales are criticized abroad: the cheap goods exported are ruining the local textile industry and much of it ends up in landfills. RECYCLING USED CLOTHING IS SO DIFFICULT Used or damaged goods made of higher quality material, i.e. around 30 percent of the items delivered to the sorting plant, can still be recycled. Sweaters, shirts, trousers - everything then goes into a press to produce cleaning rags or insulation materials. Kai Nebel heads up research into textile sustainability and recycling at Reutlingen University. He explains that most clothing is made of mixed textiles whose fibers can no longer be separated.
