See now with professor Larissa Campos, from the Free Enem Course channel. Organic functions are groups of organic compounds that have similar chemical properties due to the presence of the same functional group in their structure. In turn, a functional group is an atom or a group of atoms in a molecule that serves as a site of chemical reactivity. Carbon combines with other atoms, such as H, N, O, S and halogens to form functional groups. The main organic functions are: ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, alcohols, phenols, esters, ethers, amines and amides. As we saw in the table above, hydrocarbons are compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Alcohols are characterized by the presence of hydroxyl (OH) linked to a saturated carbon. Phenol is used today in the manufacture of dyes, in the preparation of resins, in the production of phenolphthalein (an acid-base indicator widely used in titration processes in laboratories), aspirin, picric acid and the cresols mentioned above. Many phenol derivatives are used in the composition of disinfectants, such as creolin, which is most commonly used in industries and closed enclosures where animals are raised for slaughter. The ether function is characterized by an oxygen atom between two carbons. These compounds have a wide range of applications. For example, ethers can be used to manufacture artificial silk and celluloid, and also as a solvent for obtaining fats, oils, and resins. Ethers are important for medical use: they are used as an anesthetic and to prepare medications. A well-known form of ether, widely used in our daily lives and in medicine, is common ether, a highly volatile liquid that has fallen into disuse due to the risk of catching fire and causing fires. This ether is also known as ethyl ether, diethyl ether, or sulfuric ether. Aldehydes have a carbonyl group, which is the first primary carbon. The main example of an aldehyde is methanal, which can be used as a disinfectant and to preserve cadavers and anatomical parts. It is also used to preserve wood and animal skins, to manufacture polymers such as Bakelite, and to manufacture resins used in Formica, to obtain medications, and explosives.
