Renate Greinert is an author and was an expert witness at the hearing on the Transplantation Act before the Health Committee of the German Bundestag. She was forced to deal intensively with the subject of organ donation and transplantation. In 1985, her 15-year-old son was hit by a car while on his bicycle, fell and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury as a result. Within a few hours, she was diagnosed with brain death by doctors and subsequently asked about her consent to organ donation. Like most people, she was not aware of the magnitude of this decision at the time. She couldn't have been, because the information on the subject was rather sparse, especially at the time. But even today it is often one-sided. The consequences for those affected, who only realize afterwards what organ donation actually means, are often depressing. It was an arduous path of initially educating herself that Renate Greinert began in this situation. Since then, she has been committed to bringing information about organ donation and transplantation to the public. In 1991, she founded the organ donation complaints and contact point, gave numerous lectures on the subject, published her own work and repeatedly took part in controversial discussions.
