A show by Blendi Fevziu The political career and life of Mehmet Shehu remained heavily marked by the time he lived and by the system he himself designed and which in the end became the great drama of him and the family he left behind. Harsh, strict, with an almost absent smile, which appeared when he was next to Enver Hoxha in Congresses or on the tribunes. He survived for 27 years at the head of the government more than anyone else in the world. The life of the most important man after Hoxha has been without any particular climax. He was born in the village of Çorushë, Mallakastra on January 10, 1913. The fighter of Spain and the man who had linked his fate with communism did not stand aside. He created a platoon and joined the Albanian Communist Party and a year later was elected commander of the largest Partisan formation of the time, the First Assault Brigade. The war brought Mehmet Shehu considerable fame, and what followed was even more sensational. In 1945 he was sent to school in Moscow, from where he was called to head the general staff. At this time his relations with Koçi Xoxe were problematic, but as Minister of Telecommunications he managed to escape elimination. After Xoxe was shot in 1949, Shehu was elected Minister of the Interior, and in 1954, Prime Minister. He remained at the head of the government for 27 consecutive years, a real record. Authoritarian and extremely harsh, Mehmet Shehu was the man who carried the real burden of the Albanian economy. Together with Hoxha, they created one of the harshest and most criminal regimes of the time, a regime that would unwittingly consume him. In 1981, Mehmet Shehu was absolutely the most powerful man in the country, he also had the advantage of seeming to be established as the successor to Enver Hoxha. But in the summer of this year, his son, Skënder Shehu, met him to tell him that he had decided to get engaged. He had fallen in love with volleyball player Silva Turdiu. The engagement was also approved by the dictator Enver Hoxha, who went to visit Mehmet Shehu's family to congratulate him. Shortly after the engagement, Enver Hoxha began to take a tough position, even demanding explanations from Mehmet Shehu as to why he had made this engagement. The dictator called him and Mehmet Shehu decided to break off the engagement. After breaking off the engagement, Mehmet Shehu entered one of the most difficult periods of his life. The break-off of the engagement was not the real cause, but simply a pretext to hit the prime minister. All the citizens understood this and the only one who did not want to believe it was Mehmet Shehu. He began to feel isolated and increasingly began to spend time in the courtyard of his villa. The struggle for power at the time had also begun to be felt. Mehmet Shehu, despite the dictator Hoxha's promise to help him, feels that he was completely stripped of power and informs his family that he is being monitored. In the first two weeks of December, he realizes that the time has come to give him direction. On December 17, he leaves for the Bureau meeting with a long self-criticism in his bag. He stays in the marathon meeting where he is criticized for everything. Fiqirete Shehu is given a card, but that night would be fatal for Mehmet Shehu. He arrives at his home after the meeting and continues to be unclear about the position that Enver Hoxha would take. He reworks the long self-criticism for the next day and late that night he tries to meet Enver Hoxha occasionally, hoping to clarify the relations between them, but he had not accepted. The failure of this possible meeting had psychologically burdened Mehmet Shehu. *This material is part of the Klan Television Archive for the years 1998-2012 SUBSCRIBE to “RTV KLAN” on YouTube for more videos!
