The castle is located in Baden-Württemberg, on the summit of the Hohenzollern Mountain (855 m above sea level), still called Zollerberg in the vernacular or Zoller in the shortened form, between the cities of Hechingen and Bisingen. The idea of building a castle in its present form was taken up by the prince and later king Frederick William IV in 1819. The castle was designed by the famous Berlin architect Friedrich August Stüler, who as a student and pupil of Karl Friedrich Schinkel was appointed architect to the king in 1842. Hohenzollern Castle is a manifestation of the romantic spirit of the time and embodies the then ideal of a medieval knight's castle. In this respect, it is an example of historicism in building thought comparable to Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, but without the fantastic-theatrical splendor. #Germany #castles
