When city dwellers moan about the long, dark nights and the bitter cold, the most wonderful time of the year begins for people from the Erzgebirge: they set up meter-high pyramids in market squares and town squares, and angels, miners and candle arches in the windows announce the upcoming festival. Legend has it that miners and angels in the windows once showed miners returning home in the dark of night after their shift underground the way. An angel was set up for each daughter of the house, and a miner for each son. If all the candles were lit, the father of the family knew from afar that everyone was well!
