"40 years at Hortobágy, just a whistle in his life. We didn't feel this at first, no one even thought about it. We thought that if we didn't protect in five minutes what hadn't been protected for a hundred years before, everything would be completely destroyed. The wilderness will never disappear, I think it has weathered everything until now, you just have to be careful that it doesn't take too long for it to weather one intervention at a time and that is the biggest task that nature conservation can perform." Nature conservationist Dr. Gábor Kovács put it this way, what four decades mean in the history of Hortobágy. Last year it was 40 years since the wasteland became a national park. Debrecen Television's 40-minute documentary covers the events of 40 years, looking back a little at the antecedents and the reasons why it became necessary to protect the wilderness. Among other things, the initial period of struggle, when they wanted to breed high-altitude llamas, geese, or guinea fowl in the steppe, when the shepherds attacked those intending to break up the steppe with unrolled hoops and hooked sticks. We go from the first uncertain steps of Hungarian nature conservation to landscape reconstruction costing billions. The DTV film presents all of this in the recollections of the protagonists (shepherds, nature conservation specialists), through spectacular images, in HD resolution. At the same time, this spectacular, documentary film, which is interesting and enjoyable just because of the actors, would not have been possible without the effective cooperation of the Hortobágy National Park Directorate. During the filming, former or currently active employees of the directorate not only helped with the organization and authentic storytelling, but also became actors themselves. In addition to the unique atmosphere of the landscape, the DTV crew was also impressed by the dedicated milieu in which the nature conservation specialists work. That's why work was also a pleasure, that's why Debrecen Televízíó repeatedly takes a role in nature conservation and considers the presentation of the Hungarian landscape and Hungarian values to be a credo.
