His mother's name was Jehoaddan from Jerusalem. 2 Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, yet not with a perfect heart. 3 When his kingdom was established, he put to death the officials who had killed his father the king. 4 But he did not put to death their children, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD commanded, saying, 'Fathers shall not die for their children, nor children for their fathers; but every man shall die for his own sin.'" 5 Then Amaziah gathered the men of Judah and appointed commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds by their families, Judah and Benjamin together. He counted all the men from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to carry spear and shield and go to war, three hundred thousand men. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand mighty men of valor from the land of Israel for the hundred talents of silver. 7 But a man of God came to Amaziah and said, "O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, or with all the children of Ephraim. 8 But if you go, be strong and fight; God will defeat you before the enemy; for God is able to help and to defeat." 9 Then Amaziah said to the man of God, "What shall I do? I have given the hundred talents to the army of Israel." The man of God said, "The LORD is able to give you much more than this." 10 So Amaziah divided the army that had come to him from Ephraim and sent them back to their own country.
