The most "Varangian" place in the region, the ancient capital of Rus', the first large Slavic-Scandinavian city, a fortress that unlocked the route "from the Varangians to the Greeks", Old Ladoga is located on the left steep bank of the Volkhov. Standing by the ancient burial mounds and looking at the wide ribbon of the river disappearing behind the hills, it is easy to imagine how caravans of boats and drakkars went along it. The Ladoga fortress of the 9th - 17th centuries - stands on the cape where the Ladozhka River flows into the Volkhov. Wars did not subside around for many centuries: Ladoga covered the waterway to Veliky Novgorod, and it was from here that everyone who wanted to take away the profitable Neva lands began. The fortress in stone was founded in 1114 by the posadnik of Prince Mstislav the Great. Of the five towers built at the end of the 15th century, two are intact: the round Klimentovskaya and the square Vorotnaya. The wall along Ladozhka is being restored - between the Vorotnaya and Strelochnaya towers. The fortification was built during the era of the triumph of firearms and is therefore fully adapted for their use, equipped with powerful walls and five towers. The citadel on the Volkhov was besieged, and the settlement was burned by everyone who could: the Baltic-Finnish tribe of the Yem, German knights, the oprichniks of Ivan the Terrible, Polish troops. But the most loyal enemy was Sweden, methodically attacking Ladoga until the Northern War, after which the bright fate of Old Ladoga became history. We will touch it with you, walking through the fortress, the streets of the village and two monasteries at once.
