The Kunisaki Peninsula, which juts out into the northeastern part of Oita Prefecture, was formed by a volcano that was active approximately 2 to 1 million years ago. A unique culture of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism has developed in a landscape full of dissected valleys, and there is plenty to see.
