Awda Abu Tayeh was born in 1850 and is the fourth son among five brothers and one sister named Alia, who is known for his chivalry as he was nicknamed "Akhu Alia". His father, Harb Abu Tayeh, is the leader of the eastern section of the Huwaitat tribe. Leadership passed to Awda when he was twenty years old, despite the presence of his older brothers, and his fame quickly spread among the tribes and his name shone in the desert gatherings. In fact, the fear of the effects of his conquests was not limited to the Bedouins, but extended to the men of the Ottoman state, in addition to the fact that he was a refuge for every person sentenced to prison or who did not pay taxes or fled from compulsory conscription, and perhaps this is what prompted the American journalist Lowell Thomas to nickname him Robin Hood. The hostility was deep-rooted between Awda and the Ottoman state, and he was one of the Arab leaders to whom Faisal, son of Sharif Hussein, sent invitations to contribute to the revolution against Turkish rule, so he did not hesitate, and in early April 1917 he took the initiative to head to Faisal's camp in the Al-Wajh region. Awda's arrival opened the door wide for military action in Syria and achieved by conquering Aqaba what the British had failed to do. He opened the door to military operations in the heart of the Turkish front in an area that they considered fortified, which meant the extension of the revolution to natural Syria.
