Accompanied by her sister and a friend, Bernadette goes to Massabielle, along the Gave, to collect bones and dry wood. While she is taking off her stockings to cross the river, she hears a noise that resembles a gust of wind, she raises her head towards the Grotto: "I saw a lady dressed in white. She was wearing a white dress, a white veil, a blue belt and a yellow rose on each foot". She makes the sign of the cross and recites the rosary with the Lady. After the prayer, the Lady suddenly disappears. Sunday, February 14, 1858: the holy water Second apparition. Bernadette feels an internal force that pushes her to return to the Grotto despite her parents' prohibition. After the first decade of the rosary, she sees the same Lady appear. She throws holy water at her. The Lady smiles and bows her head. After the rosary, she disappears. Thursday, February 18, 1858: The Lady Speaks Third apparition. For the first time, the Lady speaks. Bernadette hands her a pen and a piece of paper and asks her to write her name. She replies: “It is not necessary,” and adds: “I do not promise to make you happy in this world but in the next. Can you be so kind as to come here for a fortnight?” Sunday, February 21, 1858: “Aquero” Sixth apparition. The Lady appears to Bernadette early in the morning. About a hundred people accompany her. She is then questioned by the police commissioner, Jacomet, who wants Bernadette to tell him everything she has seen. But she will only speak to him about “Aquero” (That One). Then the vision disappeared. More than fifteen hundred people are gathered and among them, for the first time, a priest. During the night, Catherine Latapie, from Loubajac, goes to the Grotto and immerses her dislocated arm in the water of the spring: her arm and hand regain their mobility. Tuesday, March 2, 1858: message to the priests Thirteenth apparition. The crowd grows larger and larger. The Lady tells her: “Tell the priests to come here in procession and to build a chapel.” Bernardette speaks about it to the priest Peyramale, parish priest of Lourdes. The latter wants to know only one thing: the name of the Lady. He also demands proof: to see the rose bush (or dog rose) of the Grotto bloom in the middle of winter. Wednesday, March 3, 1858: a smile Fourteenth apparition. Bernardette goes to the Grotto at 7 in the morning, in the presence of three thousand people, but the vision does not come! After school, she feels the interior invitation of the Lady. She goes to the Grotto and asks Her her name. The answer is a smile. The parish priest Peyramale repeats to her: “If the Lady really desires a chapel, let her tell her name and let the rose bush of the Grotto bloom.” Thursday, March 25, 1858: the name that was expected! Sixteenth apparition. The Vision finally reveals Her name, but the rose bush (of dog rose) on which the Vision places her feet during Her apparitions does not bloom. Bernadette says: “She raised her eyes to heaven, joining, in a sign of prayer, her hands that were stretched out and open towards the earth, she said to me: “Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou.” The young visionary sets off running and continually repeats, during the walk, these words that she does not understand. Words that instead impress and move the gruff parish priest. Bernadette was unaware of this theological expression that described the Holy Virgin. Only four years earlier, in 1854, Pope Pius IX had made it a truth (a dogma) of the Catholic faith. Friday, July 16, 1858: last apparition Eighteenth apparition. Bernadette hears the mysterious call to the Grotto, but access is forbidden and is made impossible by an iron gate. She therefore goes in front of the Grotto, on the other side of the Gave, in the meadow. “I seemed to be in front of the Grotto, at the same distance as the other times, I saw only the Virgin, I have never seen her so beautiful!”
