Octavian Augustus was the first Roman emperor from 27 BC to 14 AD. Born Gaius Octavius, he was adopted by Caesar and succeeded him after his assassination. He formed the second triumvirate with Antony and Lepidus and eliminated them after defeating the Caesar assassins at Philippi and the Egyptian rulers at Actium. The Senate granted him the title of Augustus and imperial power over all the provinces. He reorganized the state, the laws, the army and culture, starting the period of peace and prosperity known as Pax Augusta.
