Nuclear fuel elements in nuclear power plants are only used for a maximum of 3-6 years. After that, they are sent to nuclear waste dumps, where they remain radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years. Most of the time unused. Yet there is still a lot of energy to be extracted from these fuel elements: more than 90 percent of the energy is still in them when we throw them away. And this energy can be recycled. France is leading the way in this: the French nuclear fuel company Orano is one of the few companies that recycles nuclear fuel on a commercial scale. How? And if it is possible, why don't other countries that use nuclear energy do the same? We investigated this in our new series, the current episode of "Planet A". #nuclearenergy #atom #waste #nuclearwaste #recycling #france #planet We are destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it shouldn't be this way. Our new series, “Planet A,” explores what we can do about it, to protect the environment, the climate, and the planet.
