Restricted areas, underground facilities, nuclear bunkers: Hidden in the forests in eastern Germany lie almost forgotten buildings from the former GDR - relics of the fear of nuclear catastrophe. Wünsdorf near Brandenburg: Once the headquarters of the Soviet armed forces in the GDR, today a ghost town. This also includes the "Zeppelin" bunker, a former Wehrmacht bunker. The Soviet army used parts of the building as a communications center between the GDR and Moscow. During the Cold War, the fear of nuclear war was omnipresent. The fact that it did not stop at the GDR leadership is shown by the so-called Mielke bunker: a gigantic nuclear bunker that was intended to serve as a command post for the Stasi chief in the event of war. The building extends over two floors with more than a hundred rooms and was part of a large bunker network. For the families of the GDR's political elite, however, only simple shelters were provided in Wandlitz. Were Soviet nuclear weapons stored on the territory of the former GDR? That is considered likely, only some of the locations are kept secret to this day. Our documentary goes in search of clues, accompanies bunker experts on their descent and into the underworlds and explains what role they would have played in an emergency.
