The walls of the monastery and its temples are an architectural masterpiece. Novodevichy was founded in 1524 by the Grand Duke of Moscow Vasily III in honor of the return of Smolensk to the Russian lands. During the Soviet years, Novodevichy was a branch of the Historical Museum. And only in 2010, the complex of buildings was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church and monastic life was revived here again. The Novodevichy Convent will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2024. Large-scale restoration work is currently underway in the monastery, during which unique discoveries have been made.
