On January 1, a magnitude 7 earthquake hit Ishikawa Prefecture. Roads, water, and everything else were cut off, and mass evacuations were initiated to move all residents from isolated villages to other locations. Before the earthquake, about 700 people lived in the Minamishimi district of Wajima City, but now most of them have left the district and are living in evacuation shelters.
