Due to the COVID-19 border closure between North Korea and China, access to North Korea by domestic and foreign media has been completely impossible. The KBS reporting team obtained previously unreleased footage from a North Korean defector rescue missionary group (Caleb Mission) a month ago (filmed in late April and early May) that provides a glimpse into the lives of residents in Hyesan City, North Korea, and will be airing it for the first time in Korea through Current Affairs Planning Window. This program vividly conveys, through high-definition footage shot from a distance across the Amnok River, the site where North Korean authorities have double-reinforced barbed wire fences to prevent residents from defecting, the cityscape of Hyesan City, and the lives of North Korean residents who are gradually becoming more active even though the COVID-19 lockdown has not yet been lifted. In addition, the program shows the economic and energy difficulties residents are experiencing due to sanctions against North Korea and COVID-19 through previously unreleased footage from North Korea, and introduces scenes of deforestation caused by North Korean authorities’ wrong policies such as Juche farming. It also introduces how North Korea has been responding to climate change, the so-called "disaster-causing abnormal climate," since the Arduous March in the 1990s, and what side effects there have been, and by introducing the so-called "Anti-Blame Act" enacted by North Korean authorities last year, it shows the reality of false reporting and exaggeration of achievements that are rampant in North Korean society. In addition, it introduces the conflict between South and North Korea, which share the Imjin River basin, and shows what efforts North Korea, which was classified as a climate change-vulnerable country by the U.S. National Intelligence Service in 2021, has made in the international community to cope with climate change, and why its active efforts, such as applying for the Green Climate Fund to respond to climate change, were frustrated.
