For over three years, Noah's Ark has been moored at the quay at Industrieweg in Krimpen aan den IJssel. The immense structure is 122 metres long, 30 metres wide and has seven floors. But open to the public? The Ark hasn't been open for a long time. Johan Huibers built the ship. The structure contains all kinds of replicas of animals that were on board according to the well-known Bible story. The Ark opened in 2012 and has since been moored in Dordrecht, Rotterdam and now Krimpen aan den IJssel. "We had problems from the first day we moored here," says Johan. The municipality of Krimpen aan den IJssel will only allow him to open the boat to the public if a number of adjustments have been made. For example, a certain permit is required, but he cannot afford it. Israel So there seems to be no other option than to move. After he previously tried unsuccessfully to get the boat to Rio de Janeiro or Seoul, interested parties from Israel came forward. "I think that's really nice," says Johan. "There is a place in the city of Hadera, on the river. I would like to moor there and open the Ark." According to Johan, it is not a question of if, but when the boat will go to Israel. "I came back two weeks ago after talks with investors and the municipality. They actually got drunk on the Ark, they think it is so beautiful." Johan hopes that the boat will go to Israel next spring. "That would be great." A farewell opening before that time in Krimpen aan den IJssel is not possible. "I will not get permission for that. That is a disappointment." For six weeks, the reporters will travel through the region during the RTV Rijnmond Summer Tour.
