Dilapidated schools, classes cancelled, there is a shortage of teachers - never before has there been so much debate about the school system in Germany as in the past weeks and months. Schools are at their limit: never before has the situation in educational institutions in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt been as miserable as it is now. In Thuringia alone, 1,700 teachers were recently missing, in Saxony there are around 1,200, and in Saxony-Anhalt there are 1,000. In some places, teachers and experts describe the lessons as "ossified" and "no longer up to date". Nothing will change in schools in central Germany in the short term. The Corona pandemic mercilessly brought to light what had long been known behind closed doors: the school system needs to be put to the test. And this does not only include media acquired as a result of the rapid digitalization triggered by the virus, with which the new generation of pupils are supposed to learn, whether with iPads or laptops.
