This work is filled with both touching images of the poet's childhood and his memories of meeting barge haulers, who furrowed his soul and irrevocably turned Nekrasov's world upside down. The unenviable fate of the barge haulers became for the young man that fatal event that forever turned him into a revolutionary democrat.
