Dear friends! Continuing the “Culture” section, we would like to pay well-deserved attention to the significant 19th century poet Nikolai Nekrasov. An irreconcilable fighter against autocracy and tsarist censorship, Nekrasov went from being a mediocre author of lyric poetry, rightly criticized by Belinsky, to a major figure of the second half of the nineteenth century, whose work reflected important and socially acute topics of our time. He revived the Sovremennik magazine, illuminated the literary path of Turgenev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and many other great writers. We will read several of Nekrasov’s wonderful poems, but today we would like to start with his “Lullaby” — a sharp satire on the life and customs of the bureaucracy of his time. Sleep, while you cannot steal! Bye-bye. You will buy a multi-story house, You will grab a high rank And suddenly you will become an important gentleman, A Russian nobleman.
