Gogol, is a bitter satire on careless society. Akaki Akakievich, a clerk who worked at a printing agency, is surprised at the final stage of his life. At one point his cloak is so badly punctured that, to his dismay, he is forced to make a new one. After struggling to save the money, Akaki has his share of joy as the new cloak gives him a completely different image among the officials and he is invited to a soiree. When he returns, however, he is caught by thieves and stripped of his mantle. Disgustingly, he falls ill and dies. Akaki's soul turns into a ghost, and during the short time he wanders the earth, he assaults the clerk who refused to help him when his cloak was stolen.
