The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spent nine summers in Sils Maria in Switzerland before suffering a mental breakdown in 1889. Today, the Nietzsche House in Sils is run as a museum. Nietzsche gained some of his most important insights in Sils Maria. Among them was the idea of eternal recurrence, developed in the influential work "Thus Spoke Zarathustra".
