NICHOLAS MONSARRAT Nicholas Monsarrat, the son of an eminent surgeon, was born in Liverpool in 1910. He was educated at Winchester and at Trinity College, Cambridge. After the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Royal Navy as a volunteer, serving mainly on corvettes. Monsarrat's wartime experiences are recounted in several books. His most famous novel about the war in the Atlantic is The Cruel Sea.
