A session of the New Zealand Parliament was interrupted by a protest by a group of indigenous MPs, who danced the Haka against conservative opponents during the vote on a bill. The incident occurred this Thursday (15/1). The Haka, a traditional Maori war dance (the original population of New Zealand), was performed before battles to demonstrate strength and unity. At the time, the bill being voted on aimed to change the interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi, a document from the late 19th century that established equal rights for Maori and British settlers. The protest was carried out by MPs from Te Pāti Māori (“The Maori Party”, in Portuguese). During the protest, the images show MP Hana Rawhiti tearing up the bill while dancing the haka with other MPs. The video of the recording was posted by the MP herself on her Instagram profile. The translation of the post's caption reads: “Te Pāti Māori mobilizing in Parliament today, while our people across the island mobilize in the streets,” writes Hana Rawhiti, in the post. ➡ Read more at metropoles.com ???? @hana_rawhiti ➡️ Like and subscribe to our channel!
