One of the most striking trends in philosophy over the past decade has been the increasing number of thinkers turning to certain new forms of materialism, collectively known as "speculative realism." Rejecting the postmodernist denial of objective reality, contemporary philosophers are increasingly returning to the traditional formulation of the fundamental question of philosophy and are searching in various ways for a path to a reality that exists independently of us. A kind of starting point for this movement was the book After Finitude (2006) by the French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux. Maxim Kovalenko and Anton Barkhatkov discuss this most important text of contemporary Western philosophy, reveal the specifics of the new materialism, and identify the problems and shortcomings of Meillassoux's philosophical concept.
