“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.” (John 1:29) Matthew shows us how John was later struck by doubts. After he was thrown into prison by Herod because of his criticism of the king because of his second marriage, John sends his disciples to Jesus to ask: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” (Matthew 11:3) And Jesus responds curtly: “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them; and blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” (Matthew 11:4-6)
