It is the second most common type of cancer among men and the third most common among women: lung cancer. For a long time, the prognosis was considered to be rather poor - also because the disease is unfortunately often only diagnosed late. "Persistent and, in some cases, bloody coughs are a warning sign, along with fever, night sweats and fatigue," says Dr. Gerasimos Varelis. The chief physician for pulmonology, respiratory medicine and thoracic oncology, who heads the Asklepios Lung Center Hamburg-West as medical director, talks about breakthroughs in research and new therapies.
