In today's class, you will understand why RDSON is so important for the survival of the MOSFET. The MOSFET is composed of three terminals: Gate, Drain and Source. The gate terminal is what controls this transistor: When depolarized, it keeps it in the cutoff and when polarized, it puts it in conduction. The MOSFET is commonly used as a switching element in power supplies of various topologies, whether N or P channel. Next, we will perform a circuit analysis with the MOSFET switching the primary coil of a Chopper transformer. CIRCUIT ANALYSIS OF A FLYBACK SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY: Step 1: When the circuit is energized, the load voltage of the source filter capacitor passes through the primary coil of the chopper transformer and stops at the drain of the switching MOSFET, since it is in the cutoff (off). Step 2: The PWM Switching IC biases the gate-source region with a high-level pulse and the MOSFET opens the channel, grounding the output terminal of the primary coil. Step 3: Opening the MOSFET channel allows a current to flow between the drain and source terminals, causing this current to flow through the primary coil of the chopper transformer. Step 4: The current flowing through the primary of the chopper transformer coil discharges the source filter capacitor, while creating a magnetic field around it. In other words, the electric field between the plates of the filter capacitor is transformed into an electromagnetic field between the terminals of the primary coil of the chopper transformer. Step 5: The current flowing between the drain and source causes a voltage drop between the drain and source terminals due to the RDSON of the MOSFET. This voltage drop can be calculated using the equation: E = RDSON x ID. Note that the lower the RDSON value, the lower the voltage drop between the drain and source terminals of the MOSFET. This allows practically all of the voltage available in the source filter capacitor to be transformed into magnetic energy in the primary coil of the switched-mode power supply. Therefore, RDSON prevents the MOSFET channel from being destroyed when it is in conduction or saturated and at the same time contributes to the largest possible voltage being applied to the primary coil to be transformed into magnetic energy. Conclusion: I hope that by the end of this class you have understood why RDSON is so important for the survival of the MOSFET.
