The yellow Hohenschwangau Castle was used by the Wittelsbach royal family as a summer hunting lodge until 1912. The interior decoration (mostly neo-Gothic, like the castle itself) is harmonious, cohesive and original — all done in 1835, with paintings inspired by Germanic romantic themes. Neuschwanstein Castle. Neuschwanstein was designed first by a set designer... then by an architect. Built from 1869 to 1886, it is the epitome of popular romanticism in 19th-century Europe. Construction stopped with Ludwig's death (only a third of the interior was finished), and within six weeks, tourists were paying to pass through it. Today, guides lead groups of 60 people through the castle, often giving a hurried, half-hearted 30-minute tour. It’s smart to book in advance, especially for holidays and weekends during peak season (June to October — especially July to August), when spots can be booked several days in advance. Reservations cost €1.80 per person per castle and must be made online at least two days in advance (by 3:00 p.m. local time). With enough advance notice, some hotels will reserve tickets for you. You should pick up your reserved tickets an hour before your scheduled entry time, as it takes a while to get to the castles.
