The story of the star Nemesis, the supposed lost sister of the Sun, began to be written in the 1980s. When a team of paleontologists discovered that in the last extinctions on Earth there was a strangely perfect pattern of periodicity. It seemed that life was facing an extinction event every 26 million years. The discovery made scientists around the world try to find an answer, but there was no biological or geological process that could explain it. It was clear that the solution was in space. And all the clues led to the same place: the Oort cloud. Something, by an unknown process, had to disturb the comets that inhabited that external region of the Solar System every 26 million years. But no one got to the origin. Until the astronomer Richard Muller hypothesized that the person responsible for this gravitational disturbance in the Oort cloud had to be a star orbiting the Sun. Muller was theorizing that we would live in a binary star system. That our Sun would have a sister, a twin who has been able to hide in its own darkness throughout history.
