The Book of Nehemiah is the sixteenth book of the Old Testament of the Bible. It is a continuation of the post-exilic narrative of the Jews, recording events related to the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and the reforms led by Nehemiah. The narrative develops around the following main sections: Nehemiah 1–2: Nehemiah's Call and Inspection of Jerusalem Nehemiah, serving as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes, receives news of the deplorable condition of Jerusalem. He prays to God and eventually asks the king for permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. Nehemiah 3–7: Rebuilding the Walls and Census of the People Nehemiah leads the people in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, facing opposition and challenges. The people actively participate in the rebuilding, with each group contributing to the section of the wall closest to their homes. A census is taken to identify the returnees from exile. Nehemiah 8-10: Reading of the Law and Renewed Commitment Ezra reads God’s Law to the people, causing deep repentance and spiritual renewal. The people commit to following the Law, including specific promises regarding intermarriage, the Sabbath, and the maintenance of the Temple. Nehemiah 11-13: Reorganization of Jerusalem and Reforms Nehemiah works to repopulate Jerusalem and restore Temple worship. He faces challenges such as Sabbath neglect and intermarriage. Nehemiah carries out reforms, including the cleansing of the priesthood and the restoration of tithes. The book of Nehemiah highlights Nehemiah’s effective and godly leadership, the importance of prayer, the restoration of the authority of God’s Law, and the people’s renewed commitment to God. It provides a detailed look at the practical challenges faced in rebuilding and reorganizing Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. In short, Nehemiah is a book that illustrates how dedicated leadership, fervent prayer, and commitment to the Law can lead to spiritual restoration and rebuilding of a broken community.
