Cemeteries of Saint Petersburg. The Necropolis of Masters of Arts is an object of the State Museum of Urban Sculpture located on the territory of the former Tikhvin Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The cemetery was created in 1823 after the neighboring Lazarevskoye Cemetery began to run out of free burial places. The Tikhvin Necropolis was intended for the most outstanding people of its time: from politicians to artists. As part of the policy of cemetery reconstruction and in connection with the creation of the Museum-Necropolis (later - the Museum of Urban Sculpture), the Soviet government redesigned the cemetery in 1935-1937. About 60 tombstones and monuments, declared historical and artistic values, were brought here from other cemeteries in the city (Farforovskoye, Mitrofanievsky (destroyed along with the churches), Malo-Okhtinsky Orthodox, Vyborg Roman Catholic (destroyed), Smolensk Orthodox, Lutheran and Armenian, Volkovskiye Orthodox and Lutheran, Novodevichy and Nikolskoye). At the same time, many graves were destroyed at the Tikhvin Cemetery itself, which, according to the authorities of the time, "had no value". For many decades after the burial of People's Artist of the USSR Nikolai Cherkasov in 1966, the cemetery was considered closed. Mainly because it is a museum. An exception was made only for the ashes of the composer Alexander Glazunov, transported from France in 1972, and Georgy Tovstonogov, buried here in 1989. Currently, the cemetery does not belong to the territory of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The necropolis of masters of art is a unique collection of works of memorial art.
