Naturalism was an artistic trend that emerged in Europe, more precisely in France, in the mid-19th century. It manifested itself in the artistic spheres of painting, theater, and literature. Like Realism, it emerged as a reaction that opposes romantic ideals. In literature, the Frenchman Émile Zola is the precursor of this movement with the publication of The Experimental Novel in 1880. In 1885, he published Germinal, a story that consecrated him as one of the main naturalist writers and inspired many others. Naturalist literature is similar to realist literature. However, the essential difference is that Naturalism goes beyond the limits of Realism: the themes are more controversial and the authors seek to faithfully illustrate the problems of social reality and human nature. Thus, the naturalist novel will have plots full of strong and controversial scenes. Get ready! These are not rosy stories like those of Romanticism. Nor are they just photographs of reality in the form of words like Realism did. In other words: naturalist novels are for strong readers! This is because they portray social, political and economic problems that test the humanity of their characters. Questions? Leave them in the comments. ;) ⏱ TIMING / TOPICS 00:00 Introduction 00:23 How and where did Naturalism arise? 01:14 Naturalism in Brazil 01:48 Themes of Naturalism in Brazil 02:35 The first naturalist book in Brazil - The Mulato 04:12 Social and biological determinism 07:02 Animalization (zoomorphization) 🔴 WATCH ALSO NATURALISM • NATURALISM Summary of Literature for ...
