To allow 95 percent of all people in the world to walk barefoot again - or at least in barefoot shoes - that is the vision of Helmuth Ohlhoff, one of the founders of leguano, the barefoot shoe manufacturer in Buchholz in the Westerwald. When the enthusiastic long-distance runner Ohlhoff repeatedly complained of pain, a doctor recommended that he simply run without shoes. To protect himself from stones and shards, he stuck silicone under his socks. This is how the first leguano barefoot shoe was created around 20 years ago. The company has now sold 2.5 million of them worldwide and opened 120 stores across Germany. But leguano is an exotic in the industry, which mainly has its products manufactured in low-wage countries. Leguano produces exclusively in the Westerwald and it will stay that way.
