Officially, there are around 300 different varieties, of which around 250 can be found in the Naturagart park. The banks are also colorful and diverse. This is because everything that falls on the surface of the water is driven to the bank, where it becomes a natural compost heap. The plants that grow there have adapted to these nutrient-rich conditions over millions of years and thrive. In a nutrient-poor pond, however, such as at Naturagart, it can be seen that plants such as cattails grow two to three meters high in the sewage treatment plant, while in nutrient-poor ponds they only grow knee-high. High temperatures and dryness can have a major impact on water quality and plant growth. In hot and high temperatures, the oxygen content in the water drops, which causes breathing problems for fish. In addition, nutrient-rich ponds can quickly become overgrown with algae, while nutrient-poor ponds have clear but less lushly planted banks. The solution lies in separating the nutrient systems: a bank ditch outside the actual pond can be filled with nutrient-rich soil to enable lush plant growth, while the pond itself remains clear. Filter trenches planted with special underwater plants ensure that nutrients are removed from the water and algae growth is prevented. This keeps the water clear and pond maintenance is kept to a minimum. NaturaGart Vertriebs GmbH sells products for self-construction of ponds directly to end customers.
