The National Treasure Yakushiji Temple East Pagoda (8th century, approximately 34 meters tall) still retains the graceful appearance it had 1,300 years ago. Almost 10 years have passed since the preliminary survey in 2009, and dismantling and repair work, the first in 110 years since the Meiji era, has been ongoing. The work is finally reaching its final stage. A dedication ceremony to celebrate the completion will be held in April 2020. An Asahi Shimbun reporter has been closely covering the dismantling and repair work from the beginning, and introduces the work to pass on ancient architecture to the future.
