The National Orchestra of Korea's 'Best Collection' is a series that began in 2015 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its founding. It is a masterpiece stage that presents famous songs by the Korean traditional orchestra with high-level performances by the best collaborators. Rather than playing existing songs as they are, they present them in a new way with the constantly evolving modern Korean traditional orchestra arrangement and tone. Starting with the 'National Gugak Orchestra 20th Anniversary Best Collection' (May 2015), 'Best Collection-Folk Songs' (June 2016), and 'Best Collection III-Orchestra Asia' (May 2017), we have had the opportunity to analyze musical achievements and seek a foundation by summarizing the history of gugak orchestral music or focusing on a theme. In June 2018, we will look at the past, present, and future of Park Beom-hun, a representative artist of the Republic of Korea who is active as a gugak composer, conductor, planner, and theorist. This piece was composed for a concert by 'Orchestra Asia' consisting of performers from Korea, China, and Japan, and the melody of the Korean folk song 'Boat Song' serves as the main melody. The 'power' of nabal, buk, and gong describes the existence of the great sea, and the piece depicts a ship hoisting its sails and powerfully sailing toward the sea. In anticipation of the premiere, the Chinese and Japanese performers were having a hard time playing together because they were not familiar with the fast, triple-beat rhythm unique to Korea. Eventually, Park Beom-hun invited the members to a restaurant, offered them a drink, and taught them a boat song. The Chinese and Japanese performers happily sang along and successfully played together. ※ The copyright of this video and music belongs to the National Orchestra of Korea, and you may be subject to sanctions if you use this video for commercial purposes.
